I have never really been much of a hiker, preferring slow, meandering walks with numerous stops.  I do know a number of avid hikers however, who give various reasons for hiking including exercise, seeing new locations or simply enjoying nature.  If you are a hiker, what do you look for when choosing a new trail – picnic spots, waterfalls, or swimming holes?  Perhaps you are open to anything that is new or different?  Let’s take a look at several trails that may interest you.  You may also want to take a look at Alltrails , which has an incredible amount of information on trails located all over the country.

Kaaterskills Falls (New York),Iocated 2.5 miles outside of NYC on Laurel Hills Road in the Catskills Mountains, towers over 260 feet.  90 feet higher than Niagara Falls, it is the tallest waterfall in New York.  Located 2.5 miles outside of NYC on Laurel Hills Road in the Catskill Mountains it is over 260 feet.  90 feet higher than Niagara Falls, it is the tallest waterfall in New York. Visit spring, summer or fall.  Beware however, that if you travel in the summer, it will be quite busy as this is an incredibly popular site.  Located near the town of Tannersville, this two-tiered waterfall can easily be accessed by trail.  The 1.8 mile trail is not difficult and most folks will have no problem with it.  The result is worth the hike as there is a platform with views overlooking the gorge.  Do you want a closer look?  If so, take the stone stairs down from the trail which leads directly to the base of the upper falls.

Alander Mountain Trail ( Massachusetts) –  Located in southwest Massachusetts adjacent to NY in the south of the Taconic Mountains it is considered a moderate hike that will last 3 -3.5 hours. You will immediately notice the lack of steep, jagged mountain tops which are replaced  by open, grassy areas covered with blueberries and trees.  This is a good location for a 1 -2 night backpacking trip with great views:  the Hudson Valley is to the west and the Berkshires to the east.  There are also other nearby trails you may want to visit including Monument Mountain and Great Barrington- which is more kid-friendly.

Summer is nearly here and if you are a hiker get ready.  Visit one of the above or check Alltrails for other suggestions!
