Have  you been to Guyana?  It is far from the top of most folks’ travel lists.   If you are a nature lover, you  may want to consider it..  Let’s take a look at this often-ignored South American nation!

Guyana is a small country located in North West South America.  It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean as well as Brazil, Venezuela and Surinam.  Although Arnold and I have visited some Latin American countries (Panama, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Peru and Chile), we have never been to this distinctive land.  Those who have explored it assure us it is quite unique!

Culturally Guyana is more Caribbean than it is South American.  The national language is English although a Creole language is widely spoken. This is especially true in the coastal areas (where 90% of the population lives).  Georgetown, the capital city is located here.  The city has  good parks and museums as well as nightclubs and restaurants.  There is a wide range of hotels and lodging available as well. Do plan to spend a few days there. This city, like the rest of the country, is a melting pot of various cultures with large populations of East Indians and Africans.  Chinese, European, and native Indians are also represented.  There are also many with racially mixed backgrounds. The merging of numerous cultures result in the fabulous food available.  You will definitely want to sample as much as possible!

At some point you need to leave the city to see why this country is special.  Once outside of Georgetown you’ll encounter dense tropical rainforests.  These forests house one of the most bio-diverse places on earth.  If you are a birdwatcher you will love it-there are over 800 species of birds. There are also an incredible species of animals including panthers, giant river otters, anteaters, caimans and a number of snakes!  In addition, you will be surrounded by gorgeous scenery including mountains, waterfalls and an extensive river system!

If you are interested in planning a trip here, do consider what to bring.  Guyana, located at the equator, is hot and humid. You will also need a broad-brimmed hat, sunscreen and insect repellent. Include loose comfortable clothes for protection from both the heat and numerous bugs.  Oh–and make sure you bring your bathing suit– in this special place you will need it!
