As I have mentioned previously, Hawaii is often considered one of the most beautiful places in the US. Rainforests, beaches, mountains and much more. In fact, there are parts of this state that will remind you of Costa Rica- go visit and leave your passport home! Go anytime of the year as the weather is always good. Try it in winter to chase away the blues and observe the black sand beaches and rainforests. While every location in this magical state is great, make time to visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
This huge park climbs from sea level to over 13,000 feet and contains two active volcanoes, Kilauea and Maunaloa. Kilauea is the world’s most active volcano and Maunaloa is the largest subaerial (entirely on land rather than part underwater) There are active volcanoes erupting here rather frequently. Kilauea last erupted in December 2024. In addition, there are numerous temporary closures. Be aware of this when exploring!
Start your exploration at the Kilauea Visitor Center. It is a great introduction to the park and has a number of ranger-led activities. Drive Crater Rim Drive, one of the two main roads in the park. Watch out for the geese and be sure to bring rain gear.
There are many other activities of course. Try spending an afternoon on the Circle of Fire Helicopter Tour. You’ll be glad you did!
Much appreciated!
