The Arctic Circle is generally defined as the northernmost of the five major circles of latitude shown on maps of the earth. This is where the sun never sets during the summer solstice and and in the winter you never see a sunrise. It is one of the most unique places on earth and unlike anything most of us have experienced. Alaska is the only place in the US located within it.. Outside of the US, you can witness it in Canada, Finland, Greenland, Iceland and Norway.
I have written about Norway before as a fabulous place to visit. It is also a wonderful place to enjoy before or after a cruise. If you are interested in the idyllic and unique, you must visit. Yep, you can go in the winter for the northern lights and the all day darkness. Not a fan of freezing (like me!)? Think about a summer trip with its moderate temperature and midnight sun!
If you are looking to travel in a more luxurious way, consider a journey by train! The Nordland Line, a full service train, provides a singular experience! This is a 10 hour trip and travels twice daily- once in the morning and again at night. Traveling from Trondhein to Bode, it makes several stops en route and you can enjoy the scenery. If trains don’t entice you, there are other ways to cross the Arctic Circle – make sure to visit the Arctic Circle Center and grab a postcard or memento. Explore the Lofoten Islands, it lovely little town is well worth the visit. This archipelago of islands is located above the Arctic Circle and has wonderful native cuisine and restaurants, fishing, hiking and Viking museums!
Whether you decide to see the Arctic Circle in Norway or somewhere else (Canada comes to mind), you will have a wonderful time!
