I am not a fan of cold weather. I once knew a guy who loved anyplace cold-anyplace. As time passed I discovered that many others do as well. “Coolcations” continue to grow in popularity, and more folks are seeking out polar destinations in the Arctic Circle. During the winter solstice the sun never rises. If you are looking for a different sort of trip this will be unlike any other trip you have taken. Let’s take a look at two places where you can cross the Arctic Circle.
Iceland – Officially the country of Iceland does not cross the Arctic. However, Grimsley, a tiny island 25 miles off the mainland does. You can get there via plane or ferry. The ferry is a 3 hour ride that departs daily and is reasonably priced. You’ll depart from Dalvic, located about 40 minutes from Akureyri. When you arrive,there are a variety of activities including frisbee golf and observing puffins! This town is also a wonderful place to see the Northern Lights!
Canada – Our nearest neighbor is a wonderful spot to see rare wildlife and beautiful scenery. Nearly 40% of the country is considered part of the Arctic. Travel to the Yukon, Nunavut and Foxe Basin to visit the Arctic Circle. Canada’s largest island, Baffin Island is both popular and remote. There are wonderful guided tours with wildlife sightings. You’ll see polar bears,wolves, foxes, whales and more. If you time your visit right you can see and walk on the Northwest Passage, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans!
If you are a fan of cold weather you should look into one of the above. Even if are not, you still may enjoy a short trip. Do some research – you may want to plan a visit!
