Guatemala

I am a big fan of Latin America both central and south.  While I have explored each, I am always interested in seeing more countries.  I currently have Guatemala on my mind.  Let’s take a look.

Guatemala shares a border with Belize-while they both have a strong Mayan heritage, it is one of  their few similarities..  Belize is a small, English speaking country whose orientation is to the water.  Guatemala leans in the opposite direction-inward towards the mountains. The country is covered with highlands and mountain ranges. Antigua, a small city located 1500 feet above sea level is a UNESCO listed town with cobblestone streets, pastel facades and well -preserved architecture.  Lake Atitlan., ringed with volcanoes, it.is where you will find Mayan villages, all with deep indigenous roots. Flores, a small town located on a small island in Lake Peten, is the gateway to the Mayan ruins of Tikal– and the ruins justify the journey.  They are unique..

What activities can you find in Guatemala?  Lake Atitlan, of course, with its numerous villages.  Don’t leave it at that though!. Take a look at the  markets – they are always interesting, especially the one in Chichicasterango.  It is the largest market in Central America and has numerous artifacts.  Make a point of checking the shops as well.

 Would you prefer to go by cruise?  Many lines include both Guatemala and Belize. Frequently their  itineraries will also include the Caribbean and Mexico or all of central America.  There is also a Panama Canal Cruise that leaves the southern US and travels to the West Coast with many stops in between.   Check several different cruise lines including Viking and Norwegian .   If you are looking for a super luxurious cruise, look at Regent Seven Seas.
