I have written extensively on the benefits of slow travel. A slower pace with a hefty dose of relaxation is the point behind many vacations, after all. If you believe that the journey is the destination, you need to consider traveling by rail. As an aficionado of all things rail, I have written widely on train travel but my focus has basically been on travel in North America and Europe. Today I am going to remedy that.
Africa is the second largest continent in the world. Despite that, it is only recently I’ve considered African rail travel.. Enter Rovas Rail, the premier African rail company that provides every amenity and indulgence you can think of. From their open-air balconies you will enjoy unobstructed views of plains, rainforests, deserts and everything that makes Africa such a unique destination. This company, founded in 1989, also provides gourmet meals consisting entirely of local ingredients. The suites are what you would find in a 5 star hotel and take up half a car each. Yes, this is quite pricey but the nostalgic yet sumptuous experience is far above that of other rail carriers.
Another rail option that may interest you is the Blue Train. . It is another luxury train but its journeys are restricted to South Africa. Located in the southeastern corner of the country, it has a number of trips available. Their most renowned expedition begins in Pretoria and travels to Kruger National Park. This is an exclusive tour that occurs only once a year. A three day, 2 night excursion provides a full day of exploration in the park. Expect to see elephants, zebras, crocodiles, leopards, hyenas and many other African species. Returning to the train in the evening you will enjoy a gourmet dinner followed by lavish accommodations!
Africa is incredibly full of unique diversions and railway expeditions that will remain in your memory! In a future post I will explore Asia and its wonderful offerings! In the meantime take a look at the Andean Explorer!
It certainly sounds like rail travel, although slower, is a very good way to get the full experience of taking a trip, and seeing how you got from here to there, instead of just getting on a plane in one place and getting off said plane in another. Not sure I have the patience for that, but it sounds like you get a fuller experience.
