I have written extensively on Florida.  Although it is not my favorite destination, many people feel differently.  It is certainly diverse- Jacksonville and Miami both have a unique and distinct style. Key West is a world all unto itself, of course!  The Gulf Coast tends to have a somewhat slower pace.  If you are thinking about visiting Florida’s west coast consider Sarasota.  Let’s take a brief look:

Yes, it has that soft white sand and the relaxation you are looking for.  In  fact it has been voted one of the best beaches in Florida!  It is much more however.  Its downtown buzzes with energy and creativity.  Galleries, cafes, and artistic events -the more energetic travelers will not want to miss it!  If you are looking for a quieter and more upscale place, try nearby Lido or Longboat.

The city provides a wonderful experience any  season.  Autumn is especially inviting with  less crowded beaches and more reasonable costs.  It is cooler and there are fewer thunderstorms which makes it perfect for outdoor adventures!  There are an incredible number of activities to inspire you.  The city is one of the best birdwatching destinations in the country.  Check out “The Bay”, a public park that offers more than 800 free events including free guided kayak tours and fitness classes.  In the evening you can even watch a movie under the stars!

Other ideas include visits to some of the wonderful museums available.  The Ringling Brothers museum is always a crowd please!  The Marie Selby Botanical Garden has rare tropical plants on 15 acres of greenhouses and various landscapes.  There are plenty of art museums including the Marietta Museum of Art & Whimsy.  It is a celebration of creativity with off-beat sculptures and mixed media art.

Before you visit, take some time to research the city.  You will be amazed at all it has to offer!

  1. I am not a big Florida lover myself. Your description of Sarasota might change my mind. The upper keys also appeal to me.
