Brazil

My husband and I love Latin America but Brazil is one destination we have not yet seen.  We are  interested though and have done a bit of research. Interestingly enough, it borders every country in South America with the exception of Chile and Ecuador.   It is, by far, Latin Americas the largest country in and  considered a great place for exploration! Unlike most countries in Latin America the national language is Portuguese rather than Spanish. While Portuguese is the dominant language, there are over 200 indigenous languages in remote areas of the country.  English is spoken in large cities and tourist destinations, but you will rarely find it elsewhere. Brush up on your Portuguese while planning your trip!  Let’s take a brief look at this unique country!

General Information: The official currency is the Brazilian Real.  However cash is widely preferred in most shops, stores, and restaurants.  Although major cities will accept credit cards, they prefer cash..  Although tipping is not customary, restaurants do add a 10% service charge to meals. Planning on traveling around Brazil?  There are over hundred private bus companies that generally handle transport around towns and cities but  air travel is quite popular and often preferred.  What time of year should you plan a trip? Summer season is December through March and is perfect to enjoy the beaches as well as Carnival celebration!  You may want to consider the shoulder season – October-November and April and May.   The Amazon Rainforest, Iguazu Falls and northern regions are best visited during the dry season -July and August.

Where To Go?  So much is available to pique your interest!   Take a look at the following:

Carnival– This is often the first thing that comes to mind when one thinks of Brazil!  It is thrilling (and crowded!)  If you are planning on a visit, make a hotel reservation well before you travel

Iguazu Falls – Gorgeous with rainforest trails and close views of the falls.  Take a look at Bird Park, home to exotic species  such as macaws, flamingos, and harpy eagles.

Rio de Janeiro – Famous landmarks such as the Christ the Redeemer statue.  Take a swim at Ipanema and enjoy the breeze. Explore Santa Teresa which is known for its art galleries and its laid back vibe.

Sao Paulo – Artisan markets that offer antiques, handcrafted goods and unique souvenirs.

A visit of at least a week is suggested but stay as long as you like!
