Why Travel?

Why do people travel?  Some folks  are simply  not interested and others would love to but can’t for a variety of reasons – time considerations, cost, family responsibilities. My husband and I love traveling though most of  it has been in the last 10 years.  Prior to that we were  working and  raising kids and there was always a good reason to stay home.  In retrospect, we may have been able to work around our hesitations but at the time it didn’t seem easy.  The only exception was business travel – a very different thing!  Now, however, we embrace our personal travel enthusiastically! Why do we enjoy it so much?  Here are a few of our observations:

R&R – Relaxation and rejuvenation is always a part of travel for us.  Sure, we could relax at home but it is so much better when surrounded by locations that are   beautiful, interesting or new to us!  We find the entire experience rejuvenating (well maybe not the flight!)

Curiosity and Culture – After growing up in the suburbs -me in NC and Arnold in NY, seeing places vastly different is an eye-opening experience. Coming from a new country, we loved the   history stretching back thousands of years – after all the US is a recent civilization that lacks the Colosseum, Stonehenge, verdant jungles, or many relics of ancient civilizations.  There are new foods to try and new cultures  to learn about and enjoy.  We love meeting and talking to the natives, most of whom are both friendly and knowledgeable.

Exploration and Adventure – We love to explore and take long walks through the cities we visit – stopping by restaurants (notice I put that first!) museums, shops, and various landmarks. We often opt for excursions or tours to see locations more remote.

I have to admit that while the above are true-there is one reason that trumps all three. It’s  fun y’all!-  To us  that is about the most legitimate reason of all!

How about you?  Why do you travel and what do you enjoy the most?
