I have written extensively about my love of rail travel. Trains are relaxing-you can listen to music, daydream or allow the passing scenery to mesmerize you. Some rail journeys are specifically tuned to the landscape! The point IS the scenery and the train is generally slow- it is not a commuter train!
There are wonderful train tours in the US, Canada, and Europe and you should take your time selecting the right one.. Many(but not all!) are luxury experiences. In the US, Amtrak provides excellent tours -plan them yourself or purchase a package. These are very reasonably priced. In Canada, the Rocky Mountaineer has luxury tours you may be interested in.
How about Europe? I have a number of posts about European train travel, specifically travel located in Switzerland. Both the Glacier Express and the Bernina Express are premium travel. That is not true of all train tours, however. Let’s take a look at the Grand Train Tour of Switzerland which is not a premium tour and offers a number of possibilities for the traveler.

You can go in the winter and there are many options: resorts, and destinations with an emphasis on nature, mountain landscape and sparkling lakes. Visit lovely cities and explore. If there are specific regions of the country that interest you,they have you covered!
Do you want a trip that is planned out for you-where you are free to enjoy and someone else does the work? If so you must look at Great Rail Journeys who offer both independent and escorted tours. The escorted tours have more amenities but the independent ones are less expensive
