You do not have to be a foodie to enjoy Montreal, the North American Paris, but enjoying good food is a necessity! There is a vibrant food and beverage scene replete with restaurants and fresh markets serving smoked meat and artisanal cheese. My husband and I were there for 3 days prior to a cruise and we enjoyed the city tremendously! We both love to eat and this city provided us ample opportunities! We really need a second trip for further exploration and we are always up for a trip! I want to spotlight two well-known Montreal specialities that nearly everyone enjoys!
Montreal-Style Bagels
Bagels are perhaps the region’s most notable food item, Montreal is famous for its bagels, which are made from a mixture of malt and egg before being boiled in honey-sweetened water ahead of baking. Smaller, thinner, sweeter and denser than their counterparts, Montreal-style bagels are made without salt and are typically topped with sesame or poppy seeds that pair excellently with cream cheese spreads and toppings. Ask a local and they’re likely to name either Fairmount Bagel or St. Viateur Bagel Shop as home of the city’s best bagel.
Poutine
Most likely the best known food in the Great White North. This classic Canadian dish is a mash up of french fries, cheese curds and brown gravy. Poutine originated in the 50’s and several restaurants claim ownership as its birthplace. The name is French Canadian slang that means a “mess of food” There are countless variations of the dish. Locals consider poutine an after-bar treat, apparently eating it while buzzed is an otherworldly experience. Don’t miss your chance to try this dish while visiting Montreal.
So….start exploring this wonderful city and see what else you can discover!
