To me, one necessary component of any cruise is a pre or post stay at a port city. If you have not visited before, this stay gives you a chance to determine if you want to return for a longer visit. In my last post I reviewed Santiago, Chile and San Juan, Puerto Rico. Today let’s look at Buenos Aires, Argentina .
It is frequently used as a gateway to both Patagonia and Antarctica – many cruises make a stop here. Buenos Aires is a bustling, vibrant city that provides a contrast with both destinations. It is the capital and largest city in Argentina and blends European and local culture. This multicultural city is considered one of the most diverse cities in the Americas and has many ethnicities.
With a multitude of activities and sites you will have no trouble finding amusements and diversions. Here are a few suggestions:
–Cuisine – Buenos Aires has a sophisticated food scene with a variety of restaurants and pubs. Foodies will appreciate it, but it is also a haven for anyone who enjoys fantastic food. The cuisine is Argentinian combined with influences from the numerous cultures who call Argentina their home. Be adventuresome – you will be glad you did!
-Activities – The city is the home of the tango. Visit LaBoca and stroll through San Telme to visit bars and nightclubs which feature this native dance. You can take your pick – are you interested in a more lowkey local establishment or one designed for tourists? Both are excellent and feature great dancing but the focus is different. The tourist tango bars are flashier and more expensive. Heck, try one of both!
Looking for a bit of art and nature? Go to the Avenida Santa Fe, west to the El Aleneo Grand Splendid which is often considered the most beautiful book store in the world. Don’t miss the museums you will pass and make sure you catch a ride to Paseo el Rosedal Garden with its roses-more than 90 different species!
Guided tours are available and offer something of interest to nearly everyone. With food tasting, small group walks, tours of the Tigre River Delta and many others, there is sure to be one you will enjoy.. If you’re looking for a private or more luxurious tour, they are also available. Take a look at the various offerings and decide. Project Expedition and Viator are two you may want to investigate.
