When I think of Canada it is primarily about its western coast or of the Canadian Rockies.  Vancouver, located on the coast, is one my favorite large cities. Lots of things to do!  It is walkable and has top-notch restaurants.  It is also the embarkation point for numerous cruises and rail journeys.  If you are planning on either, make a point to spend some time in Vancouver first.  You’ll be glad you did!  Victoria is a small city you reach via ferry from Vancouver.  It is a lovely place- make time for Butchart Gardens.  Both of the cities have a moderate climate, unlike much of Canada.  Visit anytime of the year!

Alberta is a different place altogether.  Banff and Jasper are both located in this province.  Thanks to our Rocky Mountaineer rail trip we were able to spend some time in both. They are both located in the soaring mountains with some of the prettiest scenery I have ever seen!  Then there is Calgary, often referred to as one of the friendliest cities in the world.  This city is the entry point to the Rockies and considers itself a town with a wild west spirit!   Its annual Calgary Stampede is not to be missed!

The Stampede is a tradition reaching back 100 years and is a real staple of the community.  It is also an event that attracts tourists.  Most of the year Calgary is a bit off the beaten path but the stampede really brings in tourists!  Calgary is a city of festivals throughout the year and prices can be very reasonable once the Stampede ends..  One especially enjoyable one is the Calgary Folk Music Festival, a highlight of the summer, which takes place in July.  Late summer events include multiple art and music festivals.  There are food trucks everywhere as well as the annual Brewery and Beast event, a celebration of breweries and creative local cuisine.  You can always take a daytrip to Banff located less than 90 miles away.

Visit in the spring, summer of fall but avoid the winter if opposed to cold weather. Winter is usually cold and dry.  Take a chance on this friendly city and enjoy yourself!

  1. Seek out a city’s off‑the‑grid neighborhoods that locals barely show tourists?
