VIA RAIL!

I’ve written (rather extensively!) about both Amtrak and the Rocky Mountaineer.  Specifically, I’ve described why I love them and why I would recommend them to anyone looking for a great rail experience.  I have never traveled  VIA nor have I posted about it.  Today I am going to change that.

For lack of  better portrayal  I would describe it as Canada’s Amtrak.  Both Amtrak and VIA are the national railroad of their respective countries.  They are quite similar but not identical.  VIA Rail has a large number of Itineraries.  Today I am going to focus on one that sounds particularly interesting to me.

“The Canadian” is a long haul train that transverses Canada.  It crosses nearly 3,000 miles in its journey from Ontario to British Columbia. This provides a wonderful opportunity to see and

enjoy all the diversity of the country.  You’ll travel through rain forests, prairies, lakes and rivers, crossing the Continental Divide at Yellowhead Pass.  At points there can be a lot of freight travel which will cause delays.  Use the delay to nap, read, talk with fellow passengers or relax.  You’ll be traveling again soon!  Travelers love this route!

This route has three classes available: Economy, Sleeper Plus and Prestige .  While Economy is comfortable with plenty of legroom, consider carefully!  The food offered is mostly snacks and beverages-and you do have to pay for them.  With a 4 day trip ahead of you may appreciate a few more amenities!  Sleeper Plus allows either  private or semi-private accommodations.  You’ll also have access to priority boarding as well as the lounge in the departing station. You’ll also receive complementary snacks, beverages, and meal service.  Prestige class includes everything included in the Sleeper class but adds a flat screen tv, complementary bar service, and a sleeper cabin that is 50% larger.

The food is rumored to be good, the ambience relaxed and the employees dedicated and friendly. Give it a try!
