We live in a wondrous time- the 21st century offers so much!  There are times, however, when slowing down the pace sounds fabulous!  There is so much noise in our lives and it can be hard to get rid of it.   Traffic, car horns and other noises can be overwhelming and serenity can be difficult to find. Escaping somewhere quiet and peaceful can be wonderful.  Fortunately there are wonderful island destinations that do not allow cars!  One well known location is Mackinac Island in Michigan.  Looking for something in the south? You cannot lose when you visit Daufuskie Island in South Carolina.  Here are a few other quiet and peaceful respites you might enjoy!

Halibut Cove, Alaska  This quaint and isolated tiny island has less than 90 full-time inhabitants.  There are no roads there, you will need to take the ferry from Homer.  If you are looking for a rugged outdoor retreat this town is for you!  Located adjacent to Kachemak Bay State Park, you can immerse yourself in the wilderness.  Take a hiking trail!  There is a wonderful pathway that takes you by Glazier Lake.  When you are ready for something less strenuous take a walk down the town’s 12 block boardwalk.  It is located on the water’s edge and has a variety of galleries and coffee shops.  This is a great getaway for energetic folks looking for relaxation.

Bald Head Island, N.C.  Located just south of Wilmington, NC this subtropical island can be reached solely by ferry or personal boat-you’ll need to leave your car in Southport  The island is located exactly where the Cape Fear River meets the Atlantic Ocean.  Here you can enjoy bike riding, hiking on nature trails, fishing-even charter a boat if you wish. Give a serious thought to kayaking on the totally silent creek.  It is a serene, tranquil, almost Zen-like experience.  Make sure you visit Old Baldy, the oldest standing lighthouse in North Carolina
