I’ve written quite a bit on Alaska. While I dislike cold weather, Alaska is an exception and I have featured both Anchorage and Fairbank in my posts. Finally here is Seward! Let’s take a look!
When planning a visit to our 50th state, make sure to decide on the method of transportation early. Two of the most popular methods are cruising and riding the Alaska Railroad. Several cruises either begin or end in Seward. If your cruise is one that does, take the opportunity to explore Seward for a few days-you will enjoy it! You can always rent a car or RV in Anchorage and drive it. In addition, there are buses and taxi services for hire. Remember that the closest airport to Seward is 120 miles away in Anchorage so take that into account.
When you are ready to leave Seward check out The Alaska Railway – a very popular option. This railway offers a 470 mile trek from Seward to Anchorage – it is a gorgeous ride and you will enjoy every minute of it. Just be sure to thoroughly explore Seward before leaving!
Ok, let’s say you made it to Seward. What do you do now? How do glaciers and wildlife sound? Book Kenai Fjords Tours. They offer both half day and full day options on their cruise tours to the gateway of Kenai Fjords National Park. You will be able to get close to glaciers and wildlife such as whales, otters, puffins and eagles. Keep your eyes open, they can appear at any time!
Do you enjoy kayaking? If so, consider a small group excursion and paddle the clear waters. You’ll have a great view of the rugged coastline as well as glaciers and snow-capped mountain peaks. Kayakers at all skill levels are welcome.
When considering a trip to Seward, keep a few things in mind:
Think about the shoulder season – Yep, it is cooler but the crowds are lighter and you may even have a chance to see the Northern Lights!
Layers! – Unpredictable weather is the standard. Layering is necessary.
Raincoat – For exactly the reason you assume!
Portable Charger – You’ll be taking a lot of pictures and will not be happy if your battery dies!
Most importantly – Have fun!
