Rocky Mount, NC?
OK folks, this is a deviation from my typical post. Rocky Mount, NC is a town of around 50 thousand located 45 miles east of Raleigh. Fairly typical of NC towns of that size, there is nothing particularly outstanding about it. I would not generally recommend it as a destination. Should you want to visit, it is an easy daytrip from Raleigh.
It does, however, have a personal meaning to me and my family. We spent three days here recently, at a local hotel. My daughter was married at a venue nearby, a good enough reason to spend a few nights.. Surrounded by country and dotted with tobacco fields, the area is reminiscent of what NC used to be -rural, small town, and unpretentious. I suspect that will not last much longer as the sterility and uniformity of the US continues – fast food restaurants on every corner, y’all.
Our daughter was married here in the surrounding countryside.and it was beautiful – the perfect place for a wedding (see photo). Keep the area in mind if you are looking for an antebellum location for a wedding or other important event. On the other hand, if you are planning a trip to my state, you may prefer the coast itself-peppered with beaches, or the mountains in the west. Don’t wait long though, it will soon be indistinguishable from the rest of the country -wiped clean of regional differences and boring.
enjoyed your blog as usual. i’m not so sure about Rocky Mount, and it sounds like you are not either.
i usually want to get more info on the places you write about, but i think you told me enough about Rocky Mount for it not to be on my must visit list.
thanks for the warning, I look forward to hearing more about the coastal area on North Carolina in future blogs.
