I grew up in the southeast and to me the beach was the Atlantic Ocean-about 120 miles from my house. My family’s annual trip to Wrightsville Beach in southeastern NC was eagerly anticipated. We would usually rent a cottage and settle in for a week or so of fun (for us kids!) and relaxation (for the parents!)
It never occurred to me that a beach did not require an ocean. In other parts of our country, people knew there were great beaches in other locations – frequently a lake. The Great Lakes, in fact, have fantastic beaches well worth a trip. Let’s take a look!
The Great Lakes are the largest source of freshwater in the US with over 10,000 miles of shoreline. There are wonderful beaches along these shorelines.. One of the very best is on Lake Michigan. This lake, the second largest of the Great Lakes, borders Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and MIchigan. One of its best beaches is Sleeping Bear Dunes.
Sleeping Bear Dunes, Michigan located around 25 miles west of Traverse City, is often thought of as one of the most beautiful places in America. Not surprisingly, it is one of only three designated US National Lakeshores in the US. This designation is an honor and similar in many ways to one of our national parks. Its freshwater coastline is protected by National Park Rangers.
Why visit? There are sand dunes towering 450 feet over Lake Michigan – absolutely breathtaking! There are seven actual beaches-you decide which to visit! Some of them are centrally located and popular and others are more remote- perfect for a quiet, mellow experience. There are 26 inland lakes which can be enjoyed by everyone in the family. They are perfect for swimming or boating, of course. Build sand castles, stroll the beach, cook or pitch a tent and camp! When you want a break from the sand there are lighthouses to explore. The landscape surrounding the lighthouses is beautiful. You can take a hike through the surroundings and when you are tired, the beach is right there!
