Panama is a diverse country with various ethnic groups and cultures.  It is generally considered safe for American tourists  who avoid the high-crime areas of Panama City.  It is also a stunningly beautiful country-lush and green.  It reminds me a bit of Costa Rica with the same tropical appearance.

It is nearly impossible to discuss Panama without mentioning the Panama Canal.  Often considered one of the seven wonders of the world, it connects the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. When the canal was completed, it changed global trade due to the 8,000 miles cut from the journey between these two oceans.   We  sailed through the canal on our cruise and it was impressive.  The engineers among us were especially fascinated!

Take the time to visit the Soberania National Park, convenietly located near Panama City.  The park is a rainforest full of birds and other animal species, including ocelots, sloths, and pumas as well as several different types of monkeys.  While we never saw the monkeys, we certainly heard them!  Soberania has trails winding through the park, a zipline, and a wonderful tram!  We rode the tram, located high in the treetops and perfect for spotting animals!  The tram moves slowly with frequent stops and is perfect for those of us interested in animal spotting and photography!

If you are interested in visiting Panama, take time to see the natural areas and rain forests.  Oh, and its currency is the American dollar!
