Millions of folks visit Alaska each year- they come on cruise ships and they come by land, they ride trains and they explore Denali. They also come for the Northern Lights and visits to Chena Hot Springs– two goals that can be intertwined.
The hot springs are composed of a variety of minerals including aluminum, iron and calcium. They have long been regarded for their healing energy. People have been coming for centuries- starting with indigenous Alaskans and continuing with the current stream of Europeans, Americans from the lower 48, and tourists from virtually every corner of the world.
The area around Fairbanks is a great staging area-both for the Northern Lights and Chena Hot Springs. Located 56 miles from the hot springs it is an easy drive. Do you want to leave the driving to someone else? Join a tour-there are some fantastic ones available in both summer and winter. Let’s take a look.
In the summer, take a Wildlife Tour. This passes through the hot springs recreation area. While you observe the flora and fauna, your guide will be sharing the history of the area. You will also stop at the Aurora Ice House Museum and have an opportunity to admire the ice sculptures and chandeliers. The high point of the trip, of course, are the springs where you can relax in the therapeutic waters while viewing the surrounding mountains. These tours are available from mid-May through late August.
The winter tours are also spectacular and include activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling and ice fishing. There are numerous Northern Light Tours of various lengths in famous Aurora Borealis areas as well as ones in the wilderness. You can combine these tours with a visit to the Hot Springs for an especially wonderful excursion.
Thanks. I read your posts, your blog is very good.
