There are a number of decisions  when planning a trip.  One of the first decisions is transportation.  If you are planning a flight, you need to check your baggage or take it with you on the plane. How do you make that decision?  Let’s take a look at each possibility.

REASONS TO CHECK BAGGAGE:

-You will be traveling for a week or longer:  It is difficult to bring enough clothing  on a longer trip.  Obviously if you plan on cleaning them during your vacation (and I know several who do so) this will not be a problem for you.

– Many international flights do not charge for checked baggage.  This is especially true if you are not traveling basic economy.  Sometimes specific air cards will waive the charge.

– There is no worry about sufficient space in the overhead space.  Perhaps even more importantly you will have more leg room!

-You have more freedom to bring the items you want.  If you are the type of traveler who wants maximum freedom and choice, you should definitely check luggage.

REASONS NOT TO CHECK BAGGAGE:

– If you are traveling a week or less, you can generally fit everything in a carry-on bag. Different countries do vary in the size of allowed carry-on luggage, so do check before packing.

– No concern over the airlines losing or delaying your luggage.

–You can use your personal item for additional space-stuff it full!  Be sure to carry essentials such as medicine and any needed documents.

-Most importantly, this can save an enormous amount of time.  Not only can you save the time involved in checking your bags, you can immediately leave the arrival airport without hanging out at the baggage carousel!

 – There are of course more reasons. What is most important to you?  It may vary depending on the specific trip, but I have found that most people have a general inclination.  Do you?  If so let me know!

  1. Barbara we try to never check our luggage. We worry about the airlines losing them (and one time they did). Packing carefully and using compression bags is very helpful
