Fairbanks and the Arctic Circle

Do you want to see the Arctic Circle without pulling out your passport?   If so, there is only one place in the US where that is possible: Alaska.    Alaska is home to so much that is  wonderful and amazing.   If you have cruised Alaska, you know how beautiful it is.  Then there is Denali, the northern lights, 24 hour sunlight- the list goes on and on.

The Arctic Circle lies 196 miles north of Fairbanks and we enjoyed our visit to the city..  However we were not there in the winter!  Fairbanks is the coldest city in the US and  I am known to avoid that type of weather!  In the summer, Fairbanks enjoys “white nights” and on June 21st the sun does not set at all.  We did not visit the Arctic when we were there–maybe next time!

Around 80 miles north of Fairbanks is the Dalton Highway.  While you can certainly take a road trip on it if you choose, you should know a bit about it before leaving.  It is 415 miles long and  mostly uninhabited. Cell phone service is quite iffy and there are only three places to gas up your car.  The road is rumored to be quite bumpy and only about 50% is paved.  This is not a ride for the faint of heart!  If you are looking for a safer and more comfortable trip, consider a group tour. This is probably the most popular way to view the arctic.  They generally leave from Fairbanks and there is a wide variety to choose from!

Have you visited the Arctic?  If so, tell me about it!  I would love to hear your experience!
