The Outer Banks of North Carolina

View of sunrise from Ocracoke Island.

The Outer Banks , with their 200 mile stretch of coastline, are well known and frequently visited.  They have their own singular look – often windswept and untamed.  Known especially for their beaches, they are also home to small villages and picturesque towns.  There is a lot to do here including kiteboarding and windsurfing.  Nag’s Head is especially famous for hang-gliding.  Visit Kitty Hawk and see the site of the Wright Brothers first flight.

Peak season is June to August, with May and September as the shoulder season.  If you are looking for smaller crowds try October.  The weather is still warm and there are less people.  Spring is a great time for outdoor adventures.  Beautiful sunrises are the norm here but you can actually watch the sunset as well!  Pineapple Beach in Manteo is one such location.  Jockey’s Ridge also features great sunsets.

Wild horses are one of the most-noted features of the Outer Banks and can be found on Ocracoke Island and in greater numbers on the northern beaches of Corolla and Carova Beach.  Blackbeard is a famous former resident of the Outer Banks.  He lived in Plum’s Point across from the Bonner House and later moved to Ocracoke.  He later died in battle off the coast of Ocracoke.

The Outer Banks is perfect for families, couples and groups of any type.  If you haven’t been there yet, give it a try.  If you have visited, what is your favorite location?
