The Everglades

Alligator

If your experience in Florida has been of the urban variety (Miami, Orlando, Tampa) you will be amazed by the Everglades.  The theme parks and pulsing nightlife are replaced by alligators, manatees, flamingos, and perhaps a Florida panther.  This is the largest subtropical wilderness in the US, folks, and it will astound you. Located between Miami and the Florida Keys, there is nothing else in the country quite like it.

Nature rules here and there is no better way to explore it than one of the many walking or biking trails.  The Gator Trail is a 15 mile loop and though it has a bicycle trail, there are no cars allowed.  Admire the old-growth Cypress in  the Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary. This is the largest collection in the world.  There is a two mile boardwalk which serves as a wonderful observation deck!

The Everglades Alligator Farms is family oriented and a lot of fun.  Here you will have an opportunity to hold and feed baby alligators.  Their Alligator Encounter is enormously popular and should be booked ahead.  Explore by airboat and enjoy gliding over the sawgrass.  You will also have an opportunity to visit over 100 adopted and rescued mammals and reptiles.

The Everglades are open all year and camping is available.  The dry season (November through April) provides the best opportunity to avoid high temperatures and humidity.  To avoid crowds, visit during the wet season (May-October).  We visited smack in the middle of summer–one word-MOSQUITOES!  Plan accordingly!

Yes, you will see alligators!
