There was a time when those traveling solo were basically ignored. Fortunately, that time is rapidly disappearing, with an ever increasing number of venues, sites and settings reaching out to the solo traveler. There really has never been a better time to explore traveling solo! If this is something you are considering, here are a few suggestions that may help you.
Do your research! There is a multitude of information online. Join, and be active in one of the many travel groups available. If you are a member of Reddit or Facebook, there are travel groups dedicated specifically to the solo traveler. This is a great place to become knowledgeable as well as finding others with the same interest (or experience) in traveling solo.
Be aware of both the pros and cons of solo travel. On the plus side, you can do as you please, make spur of the moment decisions and change your mind without having to worry about anyone else. So The cons include being lonely, paying more, and frankly it can be riskier, especially for women. Always pay attention to your surroundings. It is a good idea to look for locations with low crime rates. Switzerland, Iceland, New Zealand, Germany and Japan are places you might want to explore.
Group Travel can help provide security as well as assuage loneliness. Road Scholar and Intrepid Travel are two of the many companies that offer group travel to various locales where singles can feel connected as well as safe.
If you enjoy cruises, the news continues to improve for solos. Celebrity, Holland America and Cunard all offer single rooms as well as having programs and receptions specifically for those traveling alone. Other cruise lines are also improving their solo programs – I expect we will see massive changes within the next few years.
Do you enjoy train travel? I have traveled both the Rocky Mountaineer and Amtrak and they are perfect for those going solo. The atmosphere encourages conversation with the folks sitting near you. The dining car is a great place to forge new friendships. In addition, you will find other solo travelers on trains. Trains are a safe environment and would be a good place for one’s initial solo trip.
Have you traveled solo? If so, feel free to add any comments or suggestions that others might find helpful!
I have seen a lot on various websites, but this has added value, making it interesting to follow. Keep up the good work.
