The answer is wonderful food! I was amazed that upwards of 20% of travelers plan their trips based around cuisine. Many others will take a region’s food into account when deciding on a destination. Some travelers will take a group culinary tour, which assures they will be surrounded by others who treasure food as much as they do! Let’s take a look at these two foodie destinations: Tuscany, Italy and Charleston, South Carolina.
Tuscany – Full of rustic Italian charm, Tuscany offers immersive experiences that allow travelers to be involved in every aspect of preparing a meal. One of the experiences that my clients have especially enjoyed is working with a great home cook (Italy has a network of these). First the two of you will visit a farmer’s market and select ingredients for a meal. Next you will assist in its preparation in the cook’s home – a built-in cooking lesson! Afterwards everyone sits down for a wonderful food and wine celebration! Plan your visit to this food-rich area April – June or September/October.
Charleston, SC – Charleston is all about history and culture and the city is full of warm, friendly folks who really know how to cook! This classic low-country cuisine includes fried chicken, shrimp and grits and sweet tea (which I grew up on and still love!). It is much more than that, however. African, French and Southern traditions combine to create a unique and mouth-watering cuisine often based on great local seafood. Think about the Downtown Charleston Culinary Tour or one of the other food tours offered here. You’ll be glad you did! Try visiting Charleston March – May or September – November for the best weather.
