Ecuador

Despite being the smallest country in South America, diverse Ecuador is definitely worth a visit!   In 2024 Conde Nast named the capital city Quito as one of the best places in the world to visit.  Located on the eastern slope of the Pichincha Volcano, it is a gorgeous city replete with history.  Originally built on the foundation of an ancient Incan city, it is the location of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.  While Ecuador is located on the equator, Quito has a moderate climate due to its elevation of 9350 feet above sea level.  It is the second highest capital city in the world, second only to La Paz, Bolivia.  Yes, you can develop altitude sickness, so take it easy the first few days there.  Foodies will love this city as it has developed quite a reputation for its restaurants–so go hungry!

Not interested in a mountain location?  You’re in luck as Ecuador’s geography and climate vary widely!  Try one of the coastal cities for a decidedly different temperature and culture. Guayaquil, the largest city in the country, is located on the coast and serves as a gateway to the Pacific beaches.  Guayaquil is perhaps best known as the passageway to the Galapagos Islands, the most popular tourist destination for American citizens visiting Ecuador.

We will be taking a cruise up the South American coast in March that makes a stop in the Ecuadoran port city of Manta, another popular destination.  I only wish we could be there long enough to see Quito but that will have to wait for another trip!
