Despite being decimated by Hurricane Helene in September of 2024, Asheville, along with much of the NC Mountains, has rebounded to an incredible degree! There is so much to do and enjoy here! Surrounded by natural beauty and the great outdoors, there is also a huge art scene! Asheville, a foodie haven, has every imaginable cuisine.
Take a ride on the historic Great Smoky Mountains Railroad or visit Pisgah National Forest and see all the waterfalls! The forest also has Sliding Rock-a 60 foot natural water slide that ends in an 8 foot deep pool. Kids especially love this–just do not let them try to stand on it. I still have a scar on my chin from doing so at the age of 8! Drive the Blue Ridge Parkway or visit the Great Smoky Mountains National Park- the most visited National Park in the country!
The NC Arboretum has gorgeous gardens and miles of trails to hike or bike. Our mountains have long been known for their pottery, and Asheville is no exception. Make sure you check out the local craftsmen. In addition to pottery, there is wonderful glass art. With well over 100 local glass artists, you will want to spend a bit of time at the NC Glass Center located in the River Arts District. Heck, you can even take a lesson there!
Other activities you may enjoy include white water rafting, ziplining and canopy adventures, and hiking. There is a large variety in lodging in and around the city including family hotels as well as boutique and luxury accommodations, B&B’s, camping/ glamping and more!
I like nearly everyplace in the mountains, especially in NC and Tenn. The towns are really special though. Asheville is nice and so is Gatlinburg.
