Petrified Forest National Park

Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, Route 66 USA

This unique park is perfect for those interested in science or history.   Families with curious kids will also enjoy it here.  While the landscape itself is interesting-a wind swept  painted desert that can look a bit otherworldly, the park is more about education than it is about  unusual topography or stunning vistas.

Located in northern Arizona, it is one of the few places featuring Triassic-era fossils.   They are scattered across the desert-the remains of trees and animals that date further back in history than the dinosaurs.  There is human history here as well, including the remnants of a Native American village, as well as  carvings and petroglyphs.  The park rangers provide demonstrations on a  daily basis so visitors can experience the history and cultures of the current inhabitants of the region.

Unlike many other National Parks, the only type of camping available here is primitive camping.  If interested, you can obtain a permit from one of the visitor centers.  Otherwise, head to the town of Holbrook, located around 18 miles from the park for a selection of hotels.
