These two styles of cruising are quite distinct. Both have quite enthusiastic proponents and heck- some like both! But are there strong distinctions between the two? Yep, and most of the diversity comes down to two differences:
Ship Size – Ocean ships are large-some large enough to be like a floating town. The biggest ones can accommodate more than 3,500 passengers while the average river cruise consists of somewhere between 200 and 250 guests. This difference in size is what creates two vastly different experiences. Ocean cruises provide entertainment and fun for the whole family, while the smaller river cruise ship is focused on small ports in destinations that the larger ocean cruises would never be able to access.
Onboard Experience – Due to the difference in size between the two, the onboard experiences are totally different. The large ocean ships emphasize an active onboard experience. They have onboard pools, live shows, spas, fitness centers, theatres, special zones for kids, as well as numerous restaurants and bars. There is always something to do or explore. Active travelers, especially families, love this variety. River cruises are a different animal altogether. The voyage is more laid-back with fewer onboard activities and more time spent relaxing and enjoying shore excursions. Sailors on a river cruise can enjoy watching and admiring the views; and as the ship will be close to shore they have the opportunity to see the countryside as the ship slowly meanders through the waterways.
Which sounds right for you? Try them both–many sailors appreciate the differences and end up loving them both!
