I really haven’t written much about London compared to other places we visited in the UK and I am not really sure why. It was a stop on a trip that also included other parts of England as well as Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland. We were there in autumn-September and October specifically-and enjoyed it. Personally, I think autumn is a great time to visit-the weather was still good for outdoor activities and we also did indoor activities including a visit to Buckingham Palace and several museums. We also saw a bit of color change.
Unlike many other European cities, there really is no bad time to go. Although we chose autumn for the slightly lower prices and smaller crowds, Spring (March – May) would have been similar in crowd size, prices and temperatures. The view, of course, would have been different, with blooming trees and flowers replacing the changing leaf colors.
Summer (June – August) is the peak season and the prices and crowds reflect that. In general, London summer temperatures are in the 70’s (it CAN be hotter so be prepared should it happen!) but the days are longer and full of sunshine making outdoor activities really pleasant! Despite the crowds, the atmosphere is vibrant and happy. Take a cruise on the Thames, or just enjoy the parks and outdoor activities-there are more of them available in the summer.
Winter (December – February) is actually a really nice time as well. The weather tends towards the crisp and cool but generally falls short of frigid. This is a festive time of year, complete with twinkling lights, ice-skating rinks and a great selection of Christmas markets! The crowds are much smaller so visiting museums and historical sites tend to be more enjoyable!
So….go when you have time to do so, it is nearly impossible to have a bad time in this city!
