I am generally not a big fan of desert climates and tend to avoid them. Despite being in Arizona, however, Flagstaff is a totally different animal. With an altitude of 7,000 feet, the city has beautiful summer and autumn weather. The typical summer day is around 80 degrees. Flagstaff IS a crowded summer destination though, so you may want to consider September or October. The temperature will be cooler and crisp and the trees full of color. If you are a fan of winter sports, you will enjoy the winter-just note that the snowy winters can make for difficult travel.
You can always have Flagstaff as part of your Grand Canyon roadtrip, but it is also a great destination. Surrounded by pine forests, it has a laid-back vibe. Good food and good prices abound. Enjoy hiking, biking or take a look at Lowell Observatory or Walnut Canyon National Monument. They have two great hiking trails or take a look at the marine fossils on the limestone ledges in the inner gorge. The people who were indigenous to this area built their homes along these same ledges. It is a fascinating look back into history!
