Orlando-Disney and Beyond

The breathtaking and always beautiful Blue Springs State Park. The park is home to hundreds of manatees each winter who pack into the spring's run to enjoy its warm water.

Overall, I am not a big fan of Florida though I do love Key West (and the keys in general).    Like many parents in the eastern half of the US, we did the theme park pilgrimage when our kids were young.  There is so much more to this city, however.

Orlando can be a wonderful and budget conscious travel decision.  If you are not driving, book your flight and hotel early.  The biggest expense in an Orlando vacation are the theme parks but there are plenty of free and low cost things available.  The city is full of interesting museums – take a day away from the heat and explore the Titanic Museum or Ripley’s Believe It Or Not.  The Vietnam War Museum is free and a good choice for those who served or know someone who did.  If you can make a donation, all the better to keep it free and available to the public.

You may also enjoy a winery tour and tasting  or a trip to Blue Spring State Park to see the manatees.  My entire family certainly enjoyed it.  One thing not to miss is the Mead Botanical Garden, 47 acres of hiking trails, greenhouses and a butterfly garden.  There are guided hikes as well as yoga and tai chi available.

Disney, of course, is always there should you run out of other things…..;-)
