As I have mentioned before, I love places with a vibe that sets them apart from other destinations. There is no way to mistake Amsterdam for any other city. It is not a large city -at less than a million people it nevertheless has more to offer than many cities twice its size. It was raining when we first arrived and we dragged our luggage from the train station to our hotel. It was a much longer walk than we thought, but having not been there before, there was a lot to take in. Despite the rain, we enjoyed the walk . We were absolutely soaked by the time we found the hotel.
We had a walking tour set up for later that afternoon, the weather cooperated with us and the sun was out when our guide arrived. We took a slow, meandering walk, stopping several times for coffee. This type of walk, leisurely with frequent stops, became our regular way of travel. It is the only way to really see the city. There was pleasant coziness in the air; we felt entirely safe and welcome throughout the entire trip. Let me tell you about it.
The Van Gogh Museum is one of the places tourists visit and with good reason. We spent hours there-not because it was crowded (although it was) but because it was fascinating and beautiful. Van Gogh’s biography is certainly dramatic and draws attention, but it is overshadowed by his tremendous talent! Looking through the progression of his work is fascinating.
Part 2 will coming soon!
