The “C” in the ABC islands (the others being Aruba and Bonaire), Curacao is an autonomous country within the kingdom of the Netherlands. It is located in the Caribbean Sea just north of Venezuela. It is known for its mixture of cultures including Latin, African and over 50 European countries. Dutch, English and Spanish are all spoken here along with the native Creole.
The country is known for its white sand (not rocky!) beaches and bright blue water. In addition to its 35 beaches and fantastic dive sites you can snorkel between cliffs and remote coves. There are many museums, and nature parks. This country is bio-diverse, naturally beautiful and less Americanized than its sister islands.
One place to consider visiting is the RIF Mangrove Park located next to the cruise terminal. As its name suggests, this unique city park features mangrove trees. These trees are essential for Curacao for several different reasons. They provide coastal protection, they also provide food for marine animals as well as serving as their nursery grounds. Currently the park is divided into two sections; one is currently in use. The remainder will soon contain a visitor center.
You will also want to visit Christoffel Park, the largest in the country.. It is a biodiverse park perfect for those who love nature – there is a lot here to explore. One of the trails will take you up to Christoffel Mountain, the island’s highest point. There are car routes if you prefer to drive around the park. At the points of interest, there are spectacular views of either the coast, historical points, caves, or the incredibly beautiful natural landscape.
As always, remember that Curacao (along with Bonaire and Aruba) are outside the hurricane zone and perfect to visit anytime of the year!
