Nearly everyone enjoys cruises and that certainly includes me! I do not go on as many as I would like as my husband does not share my enthusiasm! When we do use this method of travel however, we do agree on one thing – always spend some time in port cities (or ones nearby) before or after your cruise. Hey, you are already there so why not? Here are two of these cities you may want to add to your itinerary.
Santiago, Chile – The capital and largest city in Chile never fails to please! Santiago serves as the backdrop to the Andes Mountains, which are lovely. If you enjoy the view, plan a tour of the mountains. Unfortunately we were unable to do so as the heavy rain made the roads dangerous. You can also take a tour of Valparaiso and/or Vina del Mar, respectively a fishing city and a renowned beach. Don’t forget to tour Santiago itself and visit the Central Market for a taste of Chilean cuisine. San Cristobal Hill provides a viewpoint of both Santiago and the Andes. Research before you go as this city has a multitude of places you will want to see!
San Juan, Puerto Rico – First of all, no passport required! The capital and largest city, it is a beautiful island, one of the best in the Caribbean! This popular vacation spot is the oldest European city in the Americas and reminders are everywhere! A visit in the Spring is especially nice as the weather is pleasant and the crowds smaller. Stroll the neighborhoods of Old San Juan and enjoy the pastel colored streets. There is a great food scene here so make sure you sample it! The vibrant nightlife and spirited bar-hopping are exactly what you might expect from the home of the Pina Colada – be sure to have one!

We stay in the port cities for a few days before the cruise. It gives time for individual exploration. This is nice if you have never seen the city before.
