One of the least known Caribbean Islands is Anguilla. It is a British Overseas Territory in the eastern Caribbean around 200 miles east of Puerto Rico. It is an island surrounded by several small islets. What makes this country so special and why should you visit? Let’s take a look!
The beaches Anguilla has some of the best you have ever visited!. There are over 30 white sand beaches open to the public. Take your pick between lively beaches lined with restaurants and shops or the less frenetic, more peaceful ones. These quiet beaches have long, walking strands and dramatic, walled and secluded cliffs. In addition, the country offers top-tier snorkeling and scuba diving in the marine parks full of sparkling, clear water and coral reefs. Go boating! Rent a private seaboat or charter a catamaran and enjoy a sunset cruise!
Cuisine! Some of the best food you will find in the Caribbean! The signature dishes include crayfish, ceviche, peas and rice, and johnnycakes. Don’t forget the rum punch, sorrel and campari with orange!
You can fly or take a cruise- the cruises are often exclusive, luxurious vacations. They generally run from November through April. Emerald, Orient Express Sailing Yachts, Southern Cruise Line, and Windstar offer these cruises.
The island has a number of celebrations and events. These include the Moonsplash Music festival (March) with its reggae beat and seaside jams. The Festival Del Mar (March/April) coincides with Easter weekend and offers deep-sea fishing, crab races, and fresh-grilled seafood. The Anguilla Culinary Experience (May) is one of the most anticipated events of the year! There is also a Regatta in May and both summer and Christmas festivals.
If you are going to Anguilla you may want to consider adding a trip to Saint Martin or Puerto Rico. They are both within easy traveling distance and are also fascinating.
English is the official language but you will also hear Anguillan English Creole- a dialect with West African roots. Fly in from Miami or another east coast location and prepare yourself for a chill, easygoing experience. You won’t be disappointed!
