I have written rather extensively on our National Parks.  Looking back on some of my posts, I noticed that I have never written about what makes the entire  park system exceptional and worthwhile for anybody to visit.  Located all over the country, there is likely to be one  of these national wonders  convenient to you. They are reasonably priced, diverse and provide wonderful adventures for all ages. Usually there are hotels nearby and camping is available.  In fact, one of the most difficult decisions is choosing which of many parks to visit!

The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited in the country.  As one who has been there, I can assure you it is a wonderful experience!   There are, however, many less popular parks to consider.   Let’s take a look at one example.

In contrast to the Great Smoky NP, there is the Isle Royale NP located in northern Michigan.  It had the distinction of being one of the least visited parks.  Its remote location near Lake Superior may have something to do with its small number of annual visitors.  There are only two accessible  ways to get there – via seaplane or a 5 hour ferry ride.  .  Is it worth it?  Make sure to see what is available before making a decision.

While the ferry ride is long, you can turn it into a sightseeing cruise led by NP rangers.  It includes narration and some ranger-led hiking stops at some remote locations..  The Greenhouse Ridge Trail is one of the most celebrated trails in the park.  This is 43 miles long and most hikers take 3 -5 days to complete it.   This trail is unique and its biodiversity makes the length worthwhile. You may also want to tour one of three lighthouses located in the park. These 19th century structures are interesting and once again rangers will lead hikes!.  Paddle around the lake or go fishing- the hotel will actually prepare your catch for dinner!  At night  enjoy stargazing.  There is very little light here to interfere with your enjoyment.  Enjoy this pristine wilderness!

At the end of the day  check into the Rock Harbor Lodge, the only lodging in the park.  In addition to rooms there are  cottages that accommodate 4-6 people. You can,of course, choose one of the  36 campsites available.

If you are interested in a remote, quiet location, this may be for you!

  1. Thanks for giving some attention to a less known park. It sounds like a good one. Thanks
