Alaska by Train!

I have written about the Slow Travel  philosophy and how to apply it to travel.  Alaska, vast and beautiful, is the perfect place to give it a try! I believe our 50th state can be traveled in a number of ways.  An Alaskan cruise is wonderful (and if you have kids or grandkids they will love it) but let’s slow it down and see what is available.  I think my first choice would be train travel- you see a lot of great Alaskan scenery while relaxing and enjoying yourself!  I am currently looking at Alaska Railway-their offerings are both diverse and reasonably priced. Let’s take a look!

If you are interested in traveling in the winter you cannot beat the Alaska Railroad.  The Aurora Winter Train, which runs from Anchorage to Fairbanks( both ways) , has a number of packages you may be interested in.  Would you like to witness the Aurora Borealis?  There is an 8 night Borealis trek that you will enjoy.  This journey is available only in March and the starting price begins at   $1,900.00.  Although there is no guarantee you will see the Northern Lights, the possibility is good and the train has many other offerings you will enjoy!  Other packages are also available, including a 6 day/5 night trip you may be interested in!

If you are looking for a summer excursion, this Railway has them as well!   During the summer  the Denali Star, considered the railway flagship, leaves daily from Anchorage.  This is a 356 mile trip to Fairbanks, with several stops on the way. Other summer offerings include the 10 night Alaska by Daylight tour as well as the Wildlife Safari, a 7 day trip offering fantastic views of wildlife!

There are numerous other journeys available through the Alaska Railway.  Check out their home page for more or give them a call-they are a knowledgeable and friendly bunch!
