I’ve never been a scuba diver. When I was younger, I occasionally entertained the idea but never beyond a random thought. I do, however, have some friends who dive and before I retired from the travel industry, I had a couple of interested clients. Barbados was mentioned to me as were Bonaire, Costa Rica, and California’s Channel Islands. Let’s take a look at two of these.
Bonaire is part of the ABC islands. While all of the islands are known for excellent diving, Bonaire is the one mentioned most often. Known primarily for catering to the experienced diver, this island is off the beaten path and is recognized as the shore-diving capital of the world! Furthermore, it is protected by the Bonaire National Marine Park. While a $45 entry tag to the park is required, it funds conservation. This island provides a perfect climate all year and is a short flight from the US.
Channel Islands, California is where to head if you are looking for a US location and a pristine diving experience. This is the place you can expect to encounter a variety of marine animals-sharks are just one possibility! While the islands have smaller crowds most of the year, you should avoid October through January with their strong winds and rough currents. The marine life here is protected by the Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary. With no life guards and rocky beaches as well as the cold Pacific Ocean (wear a wet suit) this is not the place for novice divers.
I will spotlight other diving locations in a future post but for now, take a look at the two above and see what you think!
Thanks Barbara. We have not dived since we were younger but nice post!
I began looking for reliable information and I suggest this platform.
