I’ve written various posts on Alaska, one focusing on Juneau and one concentrating on Fairbank’s Chena Springs.   There is so much in this state that it’s difficult to limit to only a few suggestions.  Let’s take a quick look!

Anchorage is located in SW Alaska and is the largest city in the state.  It is one of the best places I know for a spring or summer visit.  After March 20th, it experiences more hours of daylight than any other city in the US.  A few months later the midnight sun shows up and it will not dip below the horizon until after 11pm. This is not your average American city but it is a very unique and enjoyable one!

If you have ever been on an Alaskan cruise or taken a trip to Denali, you most likely had a brief pause here.  Our family certainly did!  At times the Alaska Railroad will also make a temporary stop. Of course you can always fly directly here to start your Alaskan adventure!  Get there anyway you can-just get there!

Alaska is a rugged, wild state and Anchorage can provide a brief respite- wind down a bit but make sure to spend some time exploring this walkable city.  Consider some of the following:

Trolley Tour – An hour long introduction to the city with an account of local history.  This is a good place to start!

More history?  The Anchorage Museum will provide a look at native culture.

Anchorage Market – Bustling, upbeat and just plain fun. The place to be for live music, souvenirs and the work of  local artists.

The Coastal Trail may be just the place for those looking for something strenuous.  Rent a bike and take a ride.  It is not long and provides a good look at ocean views and an opportunity for great moose sightings!

There is so much to do here.  Take a little extra time and enjoy the experience!
