Congaree National Park

While Congaree NP is not the first park that comes to mind, it is lovely in its own way and  worthy of a visit.  I’ve covered a number of national parks in the southeast -here is yet another one. While different from the previously discussed  Great Smoky Mountains and Shenandoah, it has its own charm.   Include it in your road trip in the southeast – you will not regret it!

The park is located close to Hopkins, South Carolina, in the central part of the state. It provides much of what is available in other parks- hiking, canoeing, kayaking but  adds its own unique touch.  The synchronous  fireflies are especially popular with visitors. There are only 3 species of fireflies in the US and you will find them here!  From mid May to mid June the fireflies are everywhere. It is their mating season and they are dancing, glimmering and delighting  onlookers.  The blinking and sparkling draws quite a crowd!

The forest in Congaree is rich and diverse featuring a variety of plants and animals.  The largest old growth forest in the US is located here.  Interested in viewing this distinct environment?  Try hiking one of the many trails  available to all skill levels-beginner to expert.   Kayaking and canoeing are also good choices. The Canoe Trail is approximately 15 miles and travels all the way to the Congaree River (yes there is the occasional  alligator!  During this journey you will pass through some of the oldest and  tallest trees in the eastern US!  Remember to bring your own canoe or kayak however!   Take your curiosity a step further and try backcountry camping but be aware it is a  different experience than the park’s dedicated campsites (which also exist).  You will need a permit to camp in the backcountry.

Visit the park any season. Summer is the most popular but is also hot and humid.  Spring and fall  have milder temperatures.  In autumn you may also get a glimpse of the leaves changing color.  While the temperatures in winter can also be pleasant there is always the possibility of cold and even ice.
