The Galapagos Islands are an enormously popular tourist destination.  Many of these tours are via cruise–but not all of them. If you go by ship, it will usually be an expedition cruise specifically dedicated to island exploration.  Visiting  by land can also be  satisfying.  If you enjoyed  the Galapagos you will likely enjoy other wildlife islands. Such islands  are out there, folks and some are close by!  Two wonderful cays located in the Caribbean  can easily be explored.  Let’s take a look at them.

Iguana Island – Also known as Little Water Cay it serves as a nature preserve located in the Turks and Caicos Islands.  Located off the eastern coast of Providenciales, it is quickly and easily reached by  kayak. There are between 2,000 and 3,000 rock iguanas, an endangered species protected here. Be sure to stay on the boardwalks and paths provided and keep your eyes peeled!  Make sure to take a look at the Visitor Center (a deal for $10.00!)  Oh…and since you are visiting Turks and Caicos, you are required  to spend a bit of time relaxing on the beach!

Turtle Island – Also known as Laviscount Island,  located on Antigua, it is home to one of the most unusual and interesting land animals in existence –  the Giant Aldaba Tortoise.  These slow moving reptiles can live up to 200 years and generally weigh over 600 pounds.  The island is also home to the Lesser Antilles Iguana  and numerous tropical birds. Enjoy the nature trails and don’t forget to visit the beach!

On your next trip to the Caribbean, take a detour and see these amazing animals!
