Two European UNESCO Sites

In July 2025, the United States made the decision to withdraw from UNESCO effective 12/31/26.  To me, this is unfortunate as these sites represent some of the most culturally and historically valuable sites in existence.   UNESCO sites, of course, are still worthwhile to visit and their existence is valuable to our understanding of the world around us.   Currently there are over 1200 sites scattered throughout the world.  Today I am going to take a brief look at two of the European sites.

Pompeii, located close to Naples, is arguably the most famous ruins in the world.  Archeologists continue to uncover previously unknown areas of these ruins.  Pompeii was buried under more than 15 feet of volcanic ash when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD.  Nearly all the residents died but the city itself was frozen in time.  Everything is still there and you can see history as alive as possible.  Take a tour of the city and step back in time!

The Acropolis in Athens is another enormously popular site.  This large site sits on a limestone cliff in Athens – and has for centuries.  In fact it dates back to the Stone Age!  It has been the home of kings and  ancient civilizations believed it was the home of gods!  You can easily spend 3 hours touring this site.  Afterward, take a look at the Acropolis Museum, the home of numerous surviving artifacts.  Although the emphasis is on the 5th century BC, it covers much more.
