Shenandoah is another of our fantastic National Parks. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, it is an area with high peaks, waterfalls, and rolling hills. Gorgeous in autumn with brilliant foliage, it is also accessible to visit in any season. Make sure you take a drive down Skyline Drive to see all the features of this park, including the best in leaf -peeping! Autumn is is the most popular and visited season, of course!
Most visitors enter through the Front Royal entrance at the north end of Skylight Drive. It is conveniently located around 70 miles from Washington DC. Visitor Centers are located in both the north and central districts of the park. Check them out for suggestions on activities in the park. You will find an abundance of wildlife including deer, foxes, raccoons and more. There are bears, of course, so exercise caution!
Hiking is at the top of the list for most people and there are trails for every fitness level. In March through October a pass is required. Hawksbill Summit is the highest point in the park with an outstanding view. Although the total hike is only 1.6 miles, it is strenuous so beware! If you are looking for guidance, take one of the programs provided by the park rangers. Horseback riding and rock climbing are just two of their offerings.
The park has four family campgrounds available spring through fall. There are also some climate-controlled cabins. If you are the back-to-nature type, primitive back country camping is available with a permit.
Shenandoah is not among the most popular national parks but it is worth a visit. Give it a try!
