Nearly everyone loves Europe!  The US is such a young country and it is always fascinating to see lands and cultures that have survived for centuries.  It is especially appealing when we can visit them on the inexpensive side!

Greece (and Athens specifically) is the perfect place and combines reasonable prices with a multitude of diversions.  History is everywhere – this is, after all, one of the world’s greatest civilizations!  I have never been to Greece but it is on my bucket list!  I have done some research as well as talked to folks who have visited.  Here is a bit of what I have learned.

Athens, the capital of Greece, is always a great destination.  Tourism is heaviest in the summer, and prices are likely to be higher as well.  For better prices and weather consider the shoulder seasons.  September and October offer near perfect weather, better prices, and smaller crowds.  April and May are pleasant and walkable – the flowers are in bloom and this season is quite lovely.

Regardless of the season, make sure you behave respectfully to the locals and are mindful of local customs.  If you can, learn a few phrases in Greek–Thank you is always a good one to know!  There is so much to see it is hard to narrow it down but here are a few to consider:

The Parthenon, built around 430 BC as a temple, was the most decorated building in the country.

Mt Lycabettus – Located in central Athens, this limestone hill offers a panoramic view of the city.  Hike it!  The trail is less than a mile long and can be hiked in an hour or less.  There is also a funicular to take you up the hill.  For a special treat be there at sunset and watch the city lights come on!

The Acropolis – This is, of course, a must see!  It is a Unesco World Heritage Site and is considered one of the premier monuments in civilization!

Plan to spend at least 3 days here but if your plans allow it you may want to stay longer.  If you have visited Athens, please give me your impressions!
