When I was a travel advisor, most of my clients were retired and enjoyed the freedom to spend time as they pleased.. After years of working and raising children, they were finally in a position where their time was their own – and a number of them chose seeing the world. While they engaged in many types of travel, cruises were often at the top of their lists. Personally, I love cruises and I booked a lot of them. Although I worked with a number of different lines, Viking was the one I booked most frequently. I have mentioned its popularity before, but want to take a bit more time to discuss this well-loved line.
Viking is an adult cruise line and they do not allow those under 18. It has been around for over 26 years and basically invented river cruising. In addition to their far-flung destinations they also cruise the Great Lakes and the Mississippi. Although best known for European River cruising, both river and ocean cruising are incredibly popular with their fans. Their typical client is over fifty, educated, financially secure, and interested in cultural activities. Advertising is targeted directly to this audience. 88% are from the United States and the remainder from other English speaking countries. I find it notable that their river cruises have ADA accessible cabins. Viking is currently involved in making their cruises comfortable and enjoyable for solo travelers. They are also all-inclusive – those shore excursions are included in the price! No casino but lots of focus on the cultural aspects, which also includes the food which is tailored for the individual places visited. They have a loyal group of sailors who tend to cruise with them repeatedly.
Have you been on a Viking cruise? If so, let me know your thoughts!
I loved Viking as you know! Can you write about Celebrity or Cunard? I have heard good things about them as well. Barbara I enjoy your cruise articles very much!
They both have good reputations and tend more towards older travelers. I will write about in future posts! Thanks, Karen
It’s interesting to follow your articles.
