Cenotes in the Yucatan!

YucatanCenote

What is a good vacation?  It certainly depends on your interests.  Are you looking for relaxation??  Beautiful scenery?  Adventure?  While specific  locations vary, there is one similarity in many  trips: Water!  Oceans, lakes, and rivers are enormously popular but  they are not the only water-centric destinations  to see!

The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico is  known for its resorts and luxurious  ocean front hotels.  There is, however, another side of  this peninsula worth a good look.  Hidden deep within the jungles, you can find cenotes–and you will want to visit them!  Since the peninsula has little permanent surface water, its lakes and rivers exist due to these cenotes.

Cenotes are deep wells of water, sinkholes created from the breakdown of limestone. You can find them both above and beneath the earth.  Some are semi-open, some are caverns.  They are beautiful-many with turquoise water.  Some have stalactites and stalagmites and are all different from anything you have seen before!  The water is  safe for swimming as there are no dangerous animals or insects. No currents.  Some have stone pathways leading down to them.

Go on a solo visit or take one of the numerous tours that are offered!  Either way you will enjoy yourself.  Be sure to take a bathing suit!
