Despite the challenges of the past year, our National Parks continue to increase in popularity due to their beauty and unique charm.  They also tend to be light on the wallet- a plus for nearly everyone!  It has been awhile since I have written about our parks and today I am going to remedy that!  Surprisingly, I have  yet to write about the park located the closest to me – the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

Located on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, the GSMNP is the most visited park in the US and it is easy to see why.  It offers numerous hiking trails, campsites, horseback riding, waterfalls and much more.  Unlike many national parks, it is free to visitors. Its name is derived from the fog seen on the miles of ridgelines throughout the park.  The park also stands as a testament to the history and beauty of the southern Appalachians.  Designated as a UN World Heritage site, it is the most biodiverse park in the national park system with over 19,000 documented species.

The park is a haven for wildlife. Black bears are probably one of the best known as they are quite prevalent.  They must always be treated with respect.  Never approach them or allow them to approach you.  If you have a dog, you must keep it on a leash and carry bear spray with you.  As dogs are involved in the majority of confrontations with bears, think twice about bringing them.   You will see many other species, of course, including deer, elk, deer, birds and a variety of snakes.

Enjoy the hiking trails and consider Clingman’s Dome, the highest point in the park.  If you are there early in the morning you will see one of the most spectacular sunrises available!  Consider visiting some of the park’s historic structures (there are over 90!).  Find them in Cades Cove and Cataloochee among other locations.  Looking for vibrant foliage?  Visit between mid October and early November.  Gatlinburg, TN or Bryson City, NC are good towns to stay in.  There are a variety of lodging options so you are sure to find one you enjoy!
